From an Idea to My First AI App : CapGen
I always had ideas for apps but never knew how to turn them into reality. Then AI changed the way I approached building software. This is the story of how I turned a simple Instagram caption problem into my first AI-powered app.

πΈ I Post a Lot on Instagram. But Captions Were Always a Problem.
I post a lot of Instagram photos and videos, especially from my travels, hikes and everyday experiences. And while creating the content itself is fun, there was always one part of posting that I struggled with:
The caption.
Every time I was ready to post something, I would end up asking myself:
βWhat should I write?β
Then came the hashtags.
βWhich hashtags should I use?β
Sometimes, I would spend more time trying to come up with a caption than actually editing the photo. π
π€ I Wanted AI to Actually See My Content
Most AI caption tools expect you to describe your photo or video first.
That felt like defeating the purpose.
If I already have to explain:
βThis is a photo from my hike. There are mountains in the background, I'm standing on a ridge, it's sunset and...β
then why can't the AI just look at the photo and understand it?
That became the idea behind this app.
I wanted to build a tool where I could simply upload my photo, let AI understand what's actually in it, and then generate captions based on the content.
π§ AI That Understands Your Photo
The idea is simple:
Upload β AI analyzes β Generate β Copy β Post
Instead of manually describing your image, the AI looks at the visual content and identifies things like:
- π The setting and environment
- ποΈ Places, landscapes and surroundings
- π€ People and activities
- π Lighting and mood
- π¨ Overall visual aesthetic
- βοΈ Travel and lifestyle context
- π The feeling or story behind the image
It can then use that understanding to create captions that are relevant to your specific photo.
β¨ From One Photo to Multiple Captions
Once the image is analyzed, the app generates multiple caption ideas instead of forcing you to settle for the first one.
You can experiment with different vibes:
- π₯ Bold
- π Funny
- π Sassy
- π§ Deep
- π Luxury
- β¨ Inspirational
So the same photo can have a completely different caption depending on the personality you want to give your post.
#οΈβ£ And Then There Were Hashtags
The second problem was hashtags.
I don't want to copy a generic list of hashtags that has nothing to do with my post.
The app generates context-aware hashtags based on what the AI understands from the image and caption.
For example, a mountain hiking photo shouldn't just get generic tags like:
#photo #instagram #travel
Instead, the goal is to generate hashtags that are actually connected to the content, such as hiking, mountains, destinations, nature and travel.
β‘ The Best Part: Copy and Post
I also wanted the experience to be extremely simple.
Once I find a caption I like, I don't want to manually select text, switch between apps and copy hashtags separately.
So the app gives me simple options:
Copy Caption
Copy Hashtags
Copy Everything
One click, and I'm ready to paste it into Instagram.
π What Started as My Problem
This wasn't initially about building another AI tool.
It started with a very simple problem:
I create a lot of Instagram content, and I wanted something that could actually understand my content and help me write the post.
Instead of asking:
βWhat should I write about this photo?β
I wanted to ask:
βYou can see the photo. Now help me tell its story.β
That's the experience I'm building.
π From Creator Problem to AI Tool
What started as something I wanted for myself can potentially help anyone who regularly creates Instagram content.
Whether you're posting:
- ποΈ Travel adventures
- π₯Ύ Hiking trips
- π Sunsets
- π Food
- π Fashion
- ποΈ Fitness
- π¬ Reels
- πΈ Everyday moments
The idea remains the same:
Don't spend 20 minutes thinking about what to write. Let AI understand your content and give you a head start.
π Create More. Think Less. Post More.
I'm building this as a creator-first AI tool β one that understands the content you actually created rather than making you explain it all over again.
Upload your content.
Let AI see it.
Pick your vibe.
Generate your caption and hashtags.
Copy. Post. Repeat. π₯
And hopefully, spend a little less time staring at that blinking Instagram caption cursor. π
